Rio Tomatlan, Canandaigua, NY

Restaurant Review by Jennifer Kumar.

A few days ago we went to Rio Tomatlan in Canandaigua, New York.

This is a new name for our favorite resturaunt which was known formerly as El Rincon.

We came on a Saturday afternoon, it was quite empty at that time and service was very good as usual. For appetisers we had two under the category 'appetiser of the week.' I had the potato chile flauta and hubby had chorizo on small breads. I forget what they called it.

For main meals I had two vegetarian burritos with mole sauce on it. The burrito was very different. The bread was green in color. The bean filling had onions and spices in it. This was all underneath a hearty coating of mole sauce. Last time we went to a Mexican restaurant, I remember hubby telling me that to date Taco Bell was the only American -Mexican eatery he has been to that puts onions into the bean filling in a regular bean burrito. This being the case, the fact this one had onions in it was quickly pointed out by me. The mole sauce was good, but somehow not as I remembered it. The mole sauce also had two figs or dates in it.

For main meals, hubby had vegetarian flautas. He really liked it. And, like my flauta appetizer, his main meal also was covered in a green and white sauce that is so tasty that not even a drop is left behind.

We did not have dessert. For drinks, hubby had coffee, which he liked and I had hibiscus iced tea. The tea was very tasty.

Besides the great food, one must brag about the bill. It was under $30 for this meal!

Be sure not to come on Mondays. It seems Mondays are their day off!

Being that Rio Tomatlan was our favorite restaurant, especially before the name change, we wanted to give it one more try before giving up. We did visit again on Sept. 14, 2008. It was a Sunday night, though in the past Sunday or any day, it seemed to always be full of activity. This day it was very quiet. Maybe two or three other customers filled tables, at most. We ordered food, service was ok. Service was slow considering the fact few other customers were there. Food was also not hot but just the right temperature for eating. Food was ok, but the zing, the special taste food had here before when this place was called El Rincon. We left this place with a firm thought that next time in this 'neck of the woods,' we'd explore Canandaigua's other fine eateries or travel further up 332 toward route 90 to El Pacifico and try that place.

We are regulars at El Rincon in Sodus and welcomed the opportunity to try a new version at Rio Tomatlan in Canandaigua - Rio Tomatlan. We visited Rio Tomatlan on Feb.15, mid-afternoon. The restaurant was fairly busy when we arrived and new customers continued to arive and there was a mix of ages. The hostess was friendly and seated us without delay. My companion had an appetizer and commented that the accompanying salsa was the best she had ever tasted. I ordered a combination plate off the lunch menu - Chalupa and flautas with rice and beans. Deliciously topped with sauces, cream, lettece, cabbage and onions that added a nice "kick" for someone like me who likes spicy. My companion ordered Quesadillas that she reported were excellent. We were to full to order dessert. We are returning with friends tonight. Leigh
